Hi Brightwood:
I am writing to share information with you about a wonderful 64-year-old DC music program that trains children in orchestral music, the DC Youth Orchestra Program (DCYOP). DCYOP is dear to my heart as I was a student in the program from age 10 to 18. I played bassoon in a classical orchestra along with my two sisters, who played flute, cello, French horn, and saxophone. Today, I proudly serve DCYOP as a member of its Board of Directors.
DCYOP is housed nearby at Takoma Elementary School, 7010 Piney Branch Road. Annual tuition is $720, and financial assistance is provided to families if needed. Registration for 2024-2025 opens May 1 for children 4.5-18 years old. Please see the attachments and link dcyop.org for more information. DCYOP welcomes students of all skill levels, whether they are beginners or advanced musicians. The program provides a nurturing environment where students can develop their musical talents and grow as individuals.
Founded in 1960 by Mr. Lyn McLain, the DC Youth Orchestra’s mission is to empower young people to transform their lives through music and community. At DCYOP, competition is replaced by a shared pursuit of musical excellence, and students develop the confidence and creativity to take on life’s challenges. Since 1960, more than 50,000 students of all backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles have studied and played with DCYOP, toured 24 countries and met and learned from master musicians, including Copland and Yo-Yo Ma.
If anyone is interested in learning more about DCYOP, I encourage you to reach out to Rashida Coleman, Director of Student and Family Engagement, at rashida@dcyop.org. Rashida can help you if you are interested in registering your child for the program.
Encores and Standing Ovations!
My best,
Commissioner Kim Patterson
