MPD contacted me today with information to share with the Brightwood community about an increased police presence tomorrow (1/27) throughout DC, including Brightwood.
In preparation for possible protests tomorrow after the release of Memphis police body cam video in the death of Tyree Nichols, D.C. police will fully activate all sworn members in preparation for possible protests following charges against five fired Memphis police officers in the killing of Mr. Nichols, a Black motorist who died three days after a confrontation with police during a traffic stop. The Jan 7 traffic stop video will be released to the public Friday evening (1/27/23).
“We understand that a video will be released and contains disturbing content that does not represent the values that any law enforcement officers are sworn to uphold,” the Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement. D.C. police said officers would be prepared to respond should illegal activity occur during protests.
