Hi Brightwood:
On January 2, 2023, I was proudly sworn in as Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner (ANC) 4A05. From that day forward I zealously worked to resolve and manage daily community challenges and concerns in Brightwood. I did so with pride and conviction and stayed focused on improving our kind and beautiful neighborhood. On January 2, 2025, my 2-year term as Commissioner has ended.
As ANC I was given a gift – the opportunity to meet and serve so many caring and gracious neighbors who make Brightwood a special place to live. Your concerns were my concerns, and I thank everyone who stood with me on the many issues we worked together to resolve. I could not have been successful without you, and I gratefully thank everyone for caring about our community and emailing and calling me with your concerns. Together, we made many improvements in Brightwood.
Here are just a few…
Reduced neighborhood crime by holding multiple Community Walks with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), installed two MPD crime cameras, received approval for two Drug-Free Zones, and increased MDP presence and awareness at the corner of Georgia & Sheridan.
Reduced the rodent population through organized rodent bait and extermination walks with the Department of Public Health, the Department of Buildings, and the Department of Public Works and issued fines.
Worked with the Department of Public Works to remove illegally dumped trash from alleys and gang graffiti from building walls and issued fines.
Testified with many neighbors at Board of Zoning Adjustment hearings to protect our single-family homes from unwanted and inappropriate development by commercial developers seeking to build apartment buildings between our homes.
Cleaned our neighborhood streets by collecting over 150 bags of trash at multiple Brightwood Clean-Ups with the help of the Mayor’s Office of the Clean City.
Worked with DC Water on improving water quality on Sheridan Street by removing multiple lead pipes.
Advocated for and received LED street lighting and repaved alleys.
Testified at a National Capital Planning Commission hearing in support of an alternate plan for removing over 1200 trees from Rock Creek Golf Course.
Additionally, I am especially proud of advocating for and receiving over $1.2 million in late restitution payments for our neighbors who were plaintiffs in a slumlord lawsuit brought by the DC Office of Attorney General in 2021. I want to thank Brightwood resident Charles Lowery, former President of the DC Bar Association who took my late-night calls and responded to my emergency emails. His advice and contacts helped keep me moving forward toward a successful resolution for our affected neighbors.
As my term as Commissioner concludes, I deeply thank the many neighbors who wrote my name in as a Write-In candidate on the ballot for the General Election held on November 5, 2024. I was very touched and moved by this act of kindness and appreciation. It has been a blessing to serve you and leaving my post as Commissioner is bittersweet. I am proud to have known each one of you and grateful for the lessons learned and experiences gained during my time as ANC. The good news is I will still serve as Vice President of the Brightwood Community Association and look forward to continuing advocating for the needs of the community.
Sincerely,
Kim Patterson
